SUMMARY
The story is all about the love of Orpheus to Eurydice, they were both married to each other but shortly after it, while running to the Heath, her wife was stung by a poisonous snake that lead to her death. Upon the death of his wife, he set sail to the famous expedition of Jason in Argos just to prove that he is still important. While sailing, every time a storm is troubling them, he will play his lyre and everything will be alright. When there’s a quarrel between men he will play again and everything will be calm. Even the sirens has no equal power to the music that is being played by Orpheus. They might make them landed the ship to their shore but they did not succeed. Without the help of him, Jason’s expedition will be a failure. Orpheus can no longer take the separation between him and her wife and he felt the urge to go to the underworld to please Hades to bring back his wife. Hades agreed to it but in one condition, while travelling back to the earth he should not look back until they reached the end. Unfortunately, he looked back because he wants to be sure that she is following him. As he looked back, Eurydice can no longer be seen. The story ended with the death of Orpheus because he was torn apart by the band of Maenads. He was buried near the foot of Mount Olympus where nightingales sing more sweetly than anywhere else.
EVALUATION
The story is well explained, from the birth of Orpheus, to the marriage and to the journey of him to the underworld up until the ending, his death making it a good source when someone is assigned to tell the story of the great love shared by Orpheus and Eurydice. Also this version comes with the Original Poem that makes it more credible.
RESPONSE
The story is well written, it is the same with the story that was used in our textbook way back in high school. Also, internet sources has the same plot making it credible. It is a recommendable story for everyone. I am just a little bit sad about how brutal was the death of Orpheus.
CONCLUSION
The story is popular because of the moral lesson of the story which is we need to follow the rules even though it is simple. Just like in our society today, if we want to be happy and free from interruptions, we should at least know how to follow simple instructions.
